Friends of Penlee House Talk: The Bowerman Collection and Newlyn Art
This afternoon talk at The Queens Hotel in Penzance brings together two speakers with deep knowledge of the Bowerman Collection — one of the more substantial private holdings of Newlyn School art in the country. Mrs Janet Taylor, daughter of collector David Bowerman, shares the personal story behind her father's passion and his wish to make the works accessible to the public rather than kept from view. Revd Simon Downham, Curator of the Collection, takes on a less familiar strand of the Newlyn story: the influence of Methodism and evangelical faith on the artists who lived and worked there in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is a thread that shaped community life as much as the celebrated light and landscape. The talk also touches on the Collection's current projects, including a travelling exhibition curated by Alison Bevan and a new monograph on the Newlyn School. Tickets are £7 for Friends of Penlee House and £15 for general admission.
