Haile Selassie and the West Country Years — Library Talk

Haile Selassie and the West Country Years — Library Talk

🗓Sat 26 Sep 2026 · 10:30 AM
📍Morrab Library, Penzance

George Brendon, researcher and historian, brings his book Haile Selassie: The West Country Years to the Morrab Library's Reading Room in Penzance. His talk explores the places Emperor Haile Selassie I visited across the region during his exile from Ethiopia in the 1930s — including Penzance itself, Zennor, Torquay, Exeter, and Plymouth. Alongside the geography, Brendon weaves in personal reflections on each location and touches on some of the legends and characters connected to them. It's a fascinating corner of history that many West Country residents may never have encountered. The event is free, though donations are welcomed (suggested £5). Tickets are allocated by ballot — email [email protected] or call 01736 364474 to enter. The ballot closes 16 September. Refreshments are provided after the talk.
