Simon Yates: My Mountain Life
Mountaineer Simon Yates comes to The Acorn in Penzance on Thursday 26 November for an evening talk about his life in the mountains. In June 1985, on the remote Siula Grande in Peru, Yates found himself slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner, Joe Simpson, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives. The story became the book Touching the Void, and later a film and stage play, making both climbers household names. More than 35 years on, Yates is still an active exploratory climber and guide, making several expeditions each year — from the Arctic to the Antarctic, Alaska to Central Asia. The talk covers that journey, illustrated with images and film from his climbs, and is told with what the organisers describe as wit and dry humour.
